Thekkady Tourist Attractions
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
On the banks of the Periyar River lies a Sanctuary that comes right out of a story book. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctaury is best visited in a boat. The ride here is an experience one can only imagine. As it winds down the river, the boat passes by many unsuspecting wild elephants and other animals bathing merely a few feet away from you.
Mangala Devi
The wondrous sights and sounds of Thekkady never to cease amaze tourists. Built deep in the Periyar Forest is a temple so special you need permission from the forest warden to visit it. The Mangala Devi Temple is a small yet elegant piece of Kerala architecture standing 1337 meters above ground level on a hillock that overlooks the Periyar River.
Murikaddy
Murikaddy is a spot that truly arouses your senses. It is home to the world’s best spice plantations that have since time immemorial adorned cuisines around the world. The locals often say that to find good spice in Kerala all you need to do is follow the aroma which always leads one to Murikaddy.
Pandikuzhi
Pandikuzhi is a trekker’s delight. A lovely destination strewn with bubbling streams and narrow trails that lead you to abodes of wildlife, it is situated in Mother Nature’s bosom. If trekking isn’t a hobby, simply walk the trail and treat your eyes to the small gifts nature has to offer.
Pullumedu
Pullumedu is a lush green picnic spot in Thekkady, but unfortunately most of it falls under reserve areas. Once you do obtain permission to visit the spot it seems worthwhile. Everywhere you look there is either a glimpse of the forest or a few birds fluttering. These sights of course will capture your mind, but don’t forget to take a peek at the grand and sacred Sree Ayyappa temple visible only from Pullumedu.
Kumily
Kumily is a treat for your senses and one of the most famous spice growing areas in India. As you roam the streets of Kumily you can see foreigners herding to buy spices and the vendors boasting about their superiority. The bustle of the local markets almost immediately transports you to ancient Kerala, where it all started.
